The World Picture

It should be of concern to everyone that drug addiction is escalating out of proportion throughout the world. In China official estimates are of 1.05 million cases of heroin addiction while other agencies suggest there could be up to 4 million. A similar pro rata picture is seen in the United States, Europe, USSR, Africa and South America, in fact everywhere.

In the UK which has a population of 60 million the official line is there are 220,000 problem addicts but there could be up to 500,000 people regularly using illicit drugs which is costing the country £12 billion a year in terms of crime, treatment and prevention, not to mention the human misery of victims and their families. It is regarded as a lost war.
